about

“The House Always Wins”: Also co-written by Mack Price. In 2003, I was on tour with harmonica player Robert Bonfiglio and we had a show in Elko, NV. Elko is a small town in the middle of the desert in northern Nevada off of Highway 80. Basically, it consists of a strip of casinos and not much else. We were stuck there for a few days and I went to the movies, which is where all the local high school kids were hanging out, looking bored out of their minds. I asked one of them what their parents were doing, and they told me they pretty much come home from work and hit the casinos. The downtown area was completely deserted, and the biggest building was a giant army recruiting station. This was not long after the Iraq invasion. Metaphorically, it is a war protest song. I was channeling my inner Tom Waits in the performance. The vocals were done in one take after I smoked a few joints and chugged a bottle of whisky. I wanted to get into character and mess up my voice, like I had stayed up all night gambling.

lyrics

The House Always Wins
(Joe Deninzon/Mack Price)

I’ve seen all the poor old folks going broke
Slot cherries in their eyes
Throwing away their pension money
For that ever elusive prize

The $1.99 all you can eat buffets
The complimentary cocktails
Keepin ‘em coming till you
Can’t count the cards no more
No more…

The house always wins
The house always wins
You lose your shirt and then you lose your skin

I’ve seen all the locked out kids lose touch
In their cowboy hats
With empty eyes
So hungry to free their minds
Wandering this ghost town like vagabonds
Wasting away at the arcades and cinema
Till they gamble their time away
And land at the recruiting station
More coins in the machine

The house always wins
The house always wins
You lose your shirt and then you lose your skin…
